Langkawi’s Five Most Luxurious Resorts

A naturally beautiful island environment and judicious development efforts have helped make Langkawi one of Malaysia’s most popular beach destinations. The resorts listed here represent some of Langkawi’s finest accommodations: luxurious places with a unique sense of character.

The Danna Langkawi

The Danna Langkawi’s overall feel harkens back to British colonial days despite the addition of modern luxuries you’d expect at a five-star resort. All 125 wood-floored guestrooms feature hand-carved woodwork, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, expansive four-poster beds and in-room WiFi. The sea-view balconies overlook the Pantai Kok beach and the marina; you can slide the bathroom wall aside to enjoy the view while soaking in the tub.

The huge three-tiered outdoor swimming pool is the centerpiece of the grounds. The beach lies immediately beyond the pool with loungers available for guests (the swimmable area has a protective net to keep jellyfish out; most of them, anyway!)

The Danna’s location is by no means secluded, but the rest of the world may feel like its being kept at arms’ length.

Temple Tree Resort

Although the property is relatively small and removed from Pantai Cenang, the accommodations make up in coolness what it lacks in opulence. The eight villas are authentic old residences that were dismantled, reconstructed and restored on Langkawi.

They come in a hodgepodge of styles from the Chinese House’s rustic farmhouse charm to the Penang House’s art deco glam. Retro styling aside, the houses have been upgraded with modern fixtures like air conditioning, WiFi, and flat-screen TVs, while quirky elements like wooden bathtubs remain.

The restaurant and reception are located in the 1920s Straits Club House that also contains a library, pool room, and cocktail bar. A 25m swimming pool provides enough room for laps, and animal lovers can help at the resort’s pet charity, an animal shelter next door.

Meritus Pelangi Langkawi

The 51 Malay kampung-style chalets on the Meritus Pelangi’s property would evoke cozy Malay-style living if not for the resort’s sheer size: the 30 wooded acres are large enough to almost get lost in, and getting around would be a problem were it not for the electric buggies that ferry you between reception and your room.

The traditional design of the chalets extends to an all-timber construction, stilt construction, Malay sloping roofs and private, expansive verandahs. Beach-front chalets are practically on the sand; you can emerge from your room to walk right on Pantai Cenang.

The resort really comes into its own as a family-friendly establishment through its many activities – water sports, kids’ club activities, island tours and an on site nine-hole mini-golf course.

The Andaman Langkawi

Teluk Datai is one Langkawi’s more secluded areas, but the Andaman Langkawi makes the most of its rainforest location. The resort was designed and built to harmonize with the surroundings without reducing the luxuries available to guests. The 186 guestrooms and suites enjoy panoramic views of the rainforest, forest canopy or the sea, along with unfettered access to amenities like in-room espresso coffee machines, flat-screen TVs, and WiFi.

Guests would do well to keep a look-out for jungle wildlife like hornbills, eagles, and monkeys. Do follow the warning to keep your door closed as monkeys can get into the rooms to make mischief! The hotel sponsors nature walks and coral exploration activities to introduce their guests to the treasure trove of nature around them.

The Datai Langkawi

The resort is set some way off the main road in Teluk Datai, but the seclusion puts it right in the middle of old-growth rainforest that abuts Datai Bay; guests can visit both via a guided nature walk or a stroll on the Datai’s private beach.

Both the Pavilion restaurant (which specializes in Thai food) and the Spa at the Datai maximize the resort’s proximity to the jungle, by using it as an alluring backdrop. The jungle doesn’t preclude the possibility of fun, though – guests get the run of two tennis courts, two outdoor swimming pools, a health club, water sports facilities, and the 18-hole championship Datai Bay Golf Course.

The Datai’s 106 rooms, villas and suites have huge interiors and private verandahs that maximize the jungle and bay views. WiFi is available too so guests often feel they’re surfing the Internet from the middle of the jungle!
