Hotel Majestic in Melaka – A living heritage in the middle of a world heritage site

Hotel Majestic does indeed stand majestically on the banks of the river that led to Melaka’s development as Malaysia’s first port town. Originally built by a Chinese businessman in 1920, it has witnessed much of the town’s history and is indeed an integral part of it.

Today the award winning heritage building maintains an old world charm while providing the modern amenities sought after today. Staying in this recently restored 1920s mansion is like re-living a part of history with the porcelain floors, teakwood panels, art and antique pieces recounting the stories of yesteryear.

Open one of the pale green colored doors from any of the 54 suites and you are rewarded with views of the river and its busy watercraft plus original Malay style houses that dot the banks.

In each room there is a folding screen door that you can use to separate the bedroom and bathroom if you desire privacy or leave open for a sense of space and elegance. Warm timber floors and four poster beds help create the aura of a bygone era.

Being a luxury resort you also have access to facilities like a spa, a fully equipped gymnasium, a swimming pool and a library where you can read more about Melaka and Malaysia.

It is possible to dine in at the Majestic Melaka and here the specialty is the local Nyonya cuisine that developed in Melaka over the centuries thanks to the intermarriage of Chinese settlers and Malays. However you can also order Western and Continental cuisine.

The hotel offers its guests a complimentary walking tour around the 600-year-old narrow lanes of Melaka where descendants of the original migrants still continue to live – Indian populations exist in Little India, there are Chinese in Jonker Streetand Portuguese in their trademark houses by the seaside.

Thanks to its location in the heart of the city, most of Melaka’s important places are easily accessible from the hotel. You can undertake a river cruise to Malaysian villages up the river, enjoy a tour of the city on foot or by trishaw (local transport), familiarize yourself with local Peranakan cuisine with a cooking class or even play golf. There’s really a little something for everyone here.
